What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or when the body's cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin produced. Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose levels in the blood, allowing our cells to use it for energy. When insulin is not functioning correctly, glucose levels in the blood can become too high and cause a variety of health problems.
Types of Diabetes
There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.
-
Type 1 Diabetes: This type occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin and is usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. It is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin.
-
Type 2 Diabetes: This type occurs when the body's cells become resistant to insulin or when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to keep up with the demand. It is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
-
Gestational Diabetes: This type occurs during pregnancy and can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and baby. It usually resolves after giving birth, but it also puts women at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
